For my free inquiry project, I’ve decided to explore the intricacies of watercolour painting. I’ve had some prior experience with watercolour painting from making cards for loved ones and the use of it for therapeutic purposes. The slow and methodical process of layering and blending the paint can be calming and almost a form of meditation. It is a great way to clear the mind and escape from everyday stressors. However, I haven’t truly experimented with it on a more elaborate level. I hope to use this blog as a tool to document my watercolour painting journey over the next few weeks, including; a brief history of its artistic origins, the trials and tribulations associated with trying new techniques (e.g. shading, splattering, flat wash, wet on wet, wet on dry, etc.), as well as the use of technology to improve said skills (e.g. digital watercolour paint apps, such as the Tayasui Sketches app, youtube videos, as well as online learning tools, such as Skillshare).
Finally, I’d love to see how my painting experience might change depending on my surrounding environment, such as going on a nature walk and using the tree in front of me as my reference or inspiration. Watercolour painting can be a great way to connect with the natural world, whether it be painting landscapes, seascapes, or botanical settings.
